Meditation is more than just observing our thoughts.  In fact, I’ve heard of mindfulness meditation practitioners who find that they get more anxious, not less, when they focus on their thoughts, because their thoughts are very stressful.  The key to a successful meditation practice is to find one that helps you relax, and helps clear stressful thoughts and emotions, preferably quickly.  That way you will want to meditate again, because it is helpful, not because it is just another item on your to-do list.
